Dances are Built from Movement Ideas
Dances are Built from Movement Ideas is an interactive 45-minute performance created by Notes in Motion that can be performed for audiences K-12. During the course of the performance, the Company Education Ensemble creates and performs an original dance in conjunction with the students. Students learn about and have the opportunity to participate in the choreographic process. By using a theme and words as inspiration, students and the Education Ensemble invent gesture and locomotor movements. The introduction of a prop adds originality to the movement-making as well. New movements are assembled into a variety of different combinations and rehearsed in front of the audience before the finished product is achieved. The Ensemble, with the audience’s help, also creates a colorful mural and a detailed movement glossary during the performance. These visual elements associate words and symbols with the movement, thus practicing literacy skills and encouraging visual learning. The program culminates in an original Notes in Motion dance performance in which the audience can identify their new movements and see how those movements have been combined to form a piece of original choreography.
