Open Workshops

Notes in Motion stands apart from other New York City Dance Companies because of two core values: our collaborative process with a large network of artists and the integration of our audience in our artistic endeavors. We offer our audience inclusion in our creative process through post-show discussion of our Season Preview Performance, written feedback, and physical participation in our Open Workshops. In Notes in Motion’s process, the audience’s voice is present throughout the development of new performance works and reverberates in the culminating product. Consequently, artists are challenged to respond directly to how their work is received before the formal presentation of their work.

Open Workshops are free interactive performance events open to the public. Audience members are encouraged to physically participate and share their responses. Nobody, however, is required to get up and move. Audience members are welcome to come and observe to get a taste of the process of creating original performance work and meet Company artists. The structure of a typical Open Workshop includes the following:

  • A lively and playful warm-up activity to get the group moving together
  • A typical Workshop session in which one Workshop Artist guides the group in improvisation or interactive exercises to explore ideas directly connected with a work that s/he is currently developing
  • An in-process showing of performance work followed by a focused feedback session
  • A reception with audience and participating artists
